Seo sung-bong was born and raised in Jeju and had done a rock climbing when he was in high school as a club activity. As the club was dismissed, he had joined at an art club. That was a turning point for him to start sculpture. He majored in sculpture at the university and graduate school. At the beginning of his career, he was interested in finding various types of gates and walls of the world while comparing Jeju's gate with other countries' gates. Also he was interested in foreign countries' architecture. Jeju gate(jeongnang) is a way of wind, and connection between inside and outside. It may leads Seo to be familiar with stones and trees of Jeju and make him to work with objects from Jeju nature in Jeju.
Seo Sung-bong works with nature objects from Jeju. He breaks basalts of Jeju, lays them on the ground and places lines of stainless steel, which had wrapped the stone, on the stones’ surface. This artwork sheds light on the war and violence embedded in the history of Alddreu Airfield, which were forgotten by modern people.
